VOY Jacket Waistband piece too short?

Hello all. I am a “limited experience” sewer so this may be a silly question. I am working on my muslin for the VOY Jacket. When comparing the pattern pieces I notice the Side Waistband (piece K) is 5/8″ shorter than the Side Back (E) and Side Front (D) panels would be after they are sewn together with 3/8″ seam allowance. Unsewn, the matching seams for the small pattern pieces are 11 7/8″ for (K), 6 3/4″ for (E), and 6 1/2″ for (D). Once (E) and (D) are sewn together they are 12 1/2″, which is 5/8″ longer than (K).

I didn't notice this until I was sewing my pieces together. Am I missing something? Thanks!

D'oh! I believe I may have accidentally removed one or both side seam allowances from the piece you mentioned. If so, it was a simple math error but can throw a little bit of a monkey wrench in the assembly process, even though the lower sides are elasticized.

Assuming your measurements are true, I'd suggest just adding that amount to one end of the pattern piece (K).

If you don't have enough fabric left for new side waistbands or don't care enough to cut new ones, you can just gather the lower sides down to size so they fit the waistband, since the end result will be elasticized anyway (producing little gathers/pleats above the waistband).

Drafting issues like this are rare (if I say so myself – I do check everything a bazillion times then field-test the pattern myself before making it publicly available), but they do happen sometimes.

I'll check again and keep it in mind for when I get around to the new/updated version of this pattern, possibly later this year or next year. 🙂

    Sorry for any confusion!

I'm just glad I wasn't missing something obvious! It is easy to add to the side waistband so I will do that when I make the real jacket.

My muslin is done and now it's time to make the adjustments for fit. Wish me luck!

It is easy to just add a bit onto the side facing piece, although it also occurred to me that you could instead just cinch in the lower end of the side seam a bit (since again, it's going to be elasticized down to a good fit anyway).

    Either way will work fine.

    Happy sewing! 🙂
