Description

“They don’t make ‘em like they used do! Do they, eh? Eh, Batsy?”
This is a Victorian tailcoat sewing pattern, which can be used to make a 1989 Joker tailcoat.
Meticulously drafted from an authentic historical pattern block, this Victorian-style tailcoat was thoroughly researched and designed to be as faithful to the original as possible.
Joker purposes aside, this proper Victorian tailcoat pattern is also great for other purposes!
The pattern includes men's sizes 34-52.
The pattern is printed on three large sheets and also includes a printed copy of text-only instructions.
You love it, or your money back.
We genuinely believe you'll enjoy using this sewing pattern.
Go ahead and give it a try; make a muslin test, or even an entire costume.
If for some reason you don't love it, just let us know by the end of your first week and we'll send you a full refund.
That's a 100% money-back guarantee.
No fine print, no shenanigans.

The actual pattern pieces were sound, in that everything went together as it ought, but my experience buying, printing, and making up this pattern was less than ideal. I purchased all the “Joker” patterns but have so far only made up the tailcoat and waistcoat, and whilst everything did come out nicely, it wasn’t a nice experience. Here is my feedback:
Reasons I didn’t like the experience of using these patterns:
Website experience/buying
-Creating a whole username/password to access patterns I have bought is not ideal.
-Can’t access patterns via email
-doesn’t list currency. I did assume USD but good form would be to list it specifically.
-Doesn’t give a paper size. Just says “large sheets”. This is information which should be given before purchase,
Printing:
-Instructions only available through a link in an email. Not in the file download like most patterns, or even in an email itself. Hard to find on the website without the link.
-Instructions aren’t very useful. Assumes we all just have local specialty print shops we can bring large files to and it will magically be sorted. Still no info on paper size. It is a non standard paper size (as far as I can tell). Every other PDF pattern I have used came in A0 or tiled A4 (/US letter) formats. This is LARGER than A0, so my usual place couldn’t print it. Had to pay much more at a specialty place.
-No scale square to ensure correctness
General Pattern Issues:
-Not all pattern pieces have a marked grainline.
-Pieces are not labeled with what they are for.
-All measurements are given in Imperial, with no conversion for CM anywhere.
-Terrible instructions. Having to rely on a BLOG to make something one has paid for is ridiculous. Can’t make notes, must scroll to find one’s place every time, device times out.
-Numbered steps would be nicer so the user can know when a particular step is done. The format as is feels a little… endless.
-dots on patterns not always labelled with sizes.
-Seam allowance ought to be given on each pattern piece. Yes, even if it’s the same for the whole garment.
I have more specific feedback for the maker regarding the actual instructions, but I wanted to post these things because I feel it is important to know the quality of something before purchasing.
Obsessive Costuming Dude (Alex) (store manager) –
Thank you for the detailed review. I’m sorry to hear your experience wasn’t 5/5, but a few responses:
* The currency is listed on every product listing here on the site.
* The page sizes are all noted in the PDF file names.
* The large pages can be printed at home by tiling them, as described in the “How to Print Your Digital Sewing Pattern” link provided.
* The pattern instructions are included in the download; just extract the ZIP file for the pages and instructions.
* The detailed sewing tutorial is available as a free PDF download (regardless of whether or not anyone purchases the pattern), so you don’t have to rely on the blog version if you don’t want to.
* There is a sizing “legend” on every pattern page, with all the sizes labeled alongside their corresponding lines.
* All the pattern pieces are indeed labeled. We go to great lengths to ensure clarity!
* All pattern pieces have a marked grain line, except for those that are marked “cut on fold” since the fold line itself is the grain line.
Do keep in mind that we are available and happy to help if you have any questions or issues along the way.
Thank you for your input about the other items. I’m glad to hear the pattern itself went together well for you. 🙂
