Mork from Ork costume
I recently attended my work Christmas party that had a ‘Galaxy’ theme. I decided to make a ‘Mork from Ork’ costume, from the TV show, ‘Mork and Mindy’.
I sourced the red jumpsuit from AliExpress. I unpicked all the extra pockets and took the inside leg seams in to give it a more tapered look, so they would fit into the boots more easily.
Sewing-wise, I sewed all of the decals on the front, back and arms, using metallic silver fabric and black velvet fabric. It took a long time to match up the triangle on the front with the existing zipper, because the zipper flap insn’t in the exact centre. Even after patterning it with paper, it never seemed to line up properly. In hindsight, I should have just made the front triangle as a separatre piece that just velcroed onto the front, but I got there in the end. The black outlines I made a 1.5cm tube from the velvet material, sealed one end and used a thin dowel to turn it inside out. Then just zigzag stitched it onto the silver triangle piece. I did the same with the boot lines and arm decals, but made the arm decals only 1cm width.
The shoulder decals I went with wide self-adhesive velcro patches. I made a 2cm wide tube from the silver fabric, turned it inside out and stuffed with cushion stuffing. Then cut to size, hand-sewed the ends shut and hand-sewed to the edges of the velcro patches. I eventually went back and hand-sewed the velcro patches to the shoulder as the self-adhesive kept lifting off. Probably due to the roundness of the shoulders.
I sewed the boots using the same fabrics. I put the jumpsuit on and put on a pair of slip-on shoes. I then wrapped my leg and shoe in cling wrap, then wrapped it again in blue masking tape. I drew the boot onto the tape and cut it off my leg, using that as the pattern on the silver fabric. I added a zipper in the back and zigzag stitched the black velvet lines around the top of the boot before joing and hemming the rest of the boot fabric. I then glued and pinned the boot cover to the slip on shoes. I sewed velcro to the legs of the jumpsuit and the inside lip of the boots to keep them up while wearing them.
The gloves I made from the silver fabric, by tracing around my hands. But also discovered there’s a weird puckering in the finger webbing that happens when you do that. So, had to make the webbing areas deeper to compensate.
The helmet, wrist and neck decals I made from EVA foam and attach via velcro so they can be removed from the jumpsuit, prior to washing. Looks amazing, and is the best costume I’ve made so far. Lots of comments at the party and the CEO even asked to take a picture with me.
